JAPANESE RHINOCERUS BEETLE

___

The Japanese rhinoceros beetle (Allomyrina dichotoma) can be found in broad-leaved forests in tropical and subtropical mountainous habitats throughout the Japanese islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Okinawa, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and eastern China. In Japanese, rhinoceros beetles are called kabutomushi (かぶとむし). Mushi is Japanese for insect, and kabuto is Japanese for helmet, literally referring to the samurai helmet.

The beetles are popular in gambling, especially in the Ryukyu Islands. In the most popular game, two different male beetles are placed on a log to battle each other, trying to push each other off the log, with the one to stay on the log deemed the winner. While we can't guarantee that winning enough matches will gain you passage from one island to the next...we aren't saying it's completely out of the realm of possibility, either.

This highly detailed, hand-painted replica is made from clay and wire. Because of this, expect some variation between specimens. Glass cloche can be removed.
